The Dangers of Busyness: How to Slow Down and Reconnect with Yourself

Living in a fast-paced world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant hustle. Over the past year and a half, I've spent time back in my hometown of Los Angeles, where many people – me included – find themselves struggling with the pressures of busyness. In a city where opportunities and distractions seem endless, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of activity. The relentless pace of life, combined with a culture that often prioritizes material success, can leave us feeling drained and disconnected from what really matters.

But amid all this busyness, there’s an important question we need to ask ourselves: When do we make time for what truly nourishes us?

The Exhaustion of Constant Busyness

Living in a busy city like Los Angeles, it can feel like there’s never enough time to get everything done. Between work, errands, social obligations, and the endless stream of notifications, it’s often hard to even get the "bare minimum" done, let alone the activities that truly replenish our energy and sense of well-being. For many of us, finding space to breathe and reconnect with ourselves feels like an impossible task.

The Importance of Maintaining Your Practice

Whether it's yoga, meditation, journaling, creating art, or something as simple as drinking a cup of tea, we all have practices that help us pause, let go, and become more present. These moments of stillness are essential for our well-being. But in a busy world, how can we carve out time for them?

Slow Down, Do Less, But Do It with Intention

The key to finding space for your practice, no matter how busy you are, lies in slowing down. Instead of adding more tasks to your day, consider doing less – but doing it intentionally. When you consciously choose to slow down and focus on the present moment, you create space for your practice to flourish.

Here’s a simple exercise you can try to help you reconnect with the present:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: No matter where you are, find a spot where you can be alone for 5 to 10 minutes.

  2. Sit Comfortably: Sit in a relaxed but alert position, allowing your body to feel at ease.

  3. Breathe Intentionally: Close your eyes, and take slow, deep breaths through your nose. Follow your breath as it enters and leaves your body.

  4. Return to the Present Moment: Notice how every time you focus on your breath, you naturally return to the present moment. This simple act of slowing down can bring you back to a state of calm and mindfulness.

The Art of Slowing Down

Slowing down is an art – it’s a practice of creating space in a world that constantly demands our attention. When you slow down, you make space for your personal practices to thrive. It’s in these moments of stillness that we can hear ourselves more clearly, reconnect with our inner wisdom, and remember what truly matters.
